How do you measure your cat or dog for a costume?

Chest girth: measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs.
Neck girth: measure around the neck where a collar would sit.
Back length: measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.

Use a soft tape, measure while your pet is standing naturally and write down the unit. Size letters vary between outfits and brands, so do not choose from breed, age or weight alone. How do you get a cat or dog used to wearing a costume?

Let your pet sniff the outfit first, then reward calm behaviour.
Put it on for a minute or two at home, with treats or play, then take it off.
Build up gradually over a few days. Stop for the day if your pet is unsettled.

Never leave a pet alone in a costume. The Animal Humane Society advises supervising pets the whole time they wear one. Take the outfit off straight away if you see signs of stress: ears pinned back, a tucked tail, freezing, hiding, repeated attempts to wriggle out, heavy panting or a cat that flattens to the floor and refuses to move. Some pets never enjoy clothing; that is fine, and a costume is never worth distress.

Is a full-body costume suitable in Indian weather?

A hooded jumpsuit adds a layer. On hot or humid days, keep wear very short, choose a cool indoor room, offer water and remove the costume at the first sign of overheating, such as heavy panting or restlessness. Short-faced breeds, older pets and pets with health conditions need extra care; ask your vet if you are unsure.
