Cat Grooming Kit India: What a Cat or Kitten Actually Needs

What should a cat grooming kit include?
Most cats need only two grooming tools at home: a brush that suits their coat and a nail clipper. Add a second brush or a hair-remover glove only if your cat sheds heavily or your sofa and clothes collect fur. Kittens need the same basics, used gently and for a minute or two at a time, so grooming becomes routine before they grow up.
Why not just buy a "pet grooming kit"?
Many kits are sold for dogs and cats together, and the tools are not always right for a cat. Furtopia's three-piece Dog Grooming Kit is listed for dogs and puppies, so we don't recommend it for cats. For a cat it is usually better to choose each tool for your cat's coat and temperament, and to skip anything your cat will not tolerate. Our kit vs separate tools comparison explains the same choice for dogs.
The cat grooming kit, tool by tool
| Tool | What it is for | Who needs it | At Furtopia |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brush | Removing loose hair and keeping the coat tidy | Every cat; long-haired cats need more frequent brushing | Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush: fine pins, and a button releases the collected hair after you brush by hand |
| Nail clipper | Trimming the sharp tips of the claws | Indoor cats, older cats and cats that scratch furniture | Pet Nail Clipper with Safe Guard, listed for cats and dogs |
| Second brush (optional) | A different brush head for a different coat or for touch-ups | Cats that dislike pins or households that want a spare | Mango Steam Brush; read our steam vs slicker comparison first |
| Hair-remover glove (optional) | Lifting loose hair off your cat, clothes, bedding and sofas | Homes with a heavy shedder | Pet Hair Remover Glove |
VCA Animal Hospitals advises regular brushing matched to the coat, gentle handling, and professional help for heavy mats rather than cutting them out at home. How often to brush depends on the coat; see our coat-by-coat brushing guide.

How to start grooming a kitten
- Pick a calm moment, such as after a meal or play, and keep the first sessions to a minute or two.
- Let your kitten sniff the brush, then brush a few strokes along the back in the direction of the fur. Reward with a treat or play.
- Handle the paws gently on other days without clipping, so touching the feet becomes normal.
- Trim only the clear, sharp tip of one or two claws at a time. Avoid the pink quick inside the claw; if you are unsure, ask your vet to show you once.
- Stop before your kitten struggles. Short, positive sessions work better than one long one.
Frequently asked questions
Is a dog grooming kit safe to use on a cat?
Not necessarily. Tools designed or listed for dogs may be the wrong size or stiffness for a cat's coat and claws. Furtopia's three-piece kit is listed for dogs only. Choose a brush and nail clipper that are listed for cats.
Which brush is best for a short-haired Indian cat?
Choose by your cat's actual coat and how it reacts, not by breed. Use light pressure with any brush, and stop if your cat flinches or the skin looks red. Our slicker brush guide explains how to use pins gently.
How often should I trim my cat's nails?
It varies by cat, age and how much it scratches. Check the claws every couple of weeks and trim only the sharp tips when they start catching on fabric. Older and indoor cats often need trims more often. Ask your vet if a claw looks overgrown, split or curls towards the paw pad.
